Tamoxifen is a non-steroidal drug which is used to counter the effects of estrogen hormone. Though this hormone is more in women, it is also available in men. For them, it can especially become very problematic if the levels go too high. These heightened levels may be due to taking too much steroids for body building or just malfunctioning of the body like in cancers. High estrogen levels are specifically associated with breast cancer or breast enlargement in men otherwise known as gynecomastia. Here is a look at what the common uses of Tamoxifen for men are.
Reversing breast enlargement
Estrogen is the hormone responsible for growth and development of the breast tissue. It is due to its high levels in women that they have large breasts while the low estrogen levels in men cause them to have smaller breasts. When these levels increase in men regardless of the reason, the breast tissue becomes enlarged. This is especially associated with teenagers who have unstable hormonal balances but even older men may have their breasts enlarged. This is what is known as gynecomastia which is characterized by big and heavy breast tissue that is very uncomfortable. Among the common causes of gynecomastia include imbalance in puberty hormones, Taking certain medications and treatment regimes for diseases like HIV/AIDS and prostate cancer. In order to be effective in the treatment of enlarged breasts, Tamoxifen needs to be taken as soon as the symptoms are noted. It is not effective if started when the condition has been experienced for over 12months. It however need not be used as the symptoms of gynecomastia often go away on its own.
Breast cancer treatment
It is believed that 1% of all breast cancer cases occur in men. This is a type of malignancy that occurs due to high levels of estrogen in circulation causing abnormal breast cell division. This creates mass of tissue to in the breast that is cancerous. Tamoxifen works to counter these effects by stopping the action of estrogen. It acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator to keep estrogen from binding to its receptors. Subsequently, the effects of estrogen are not felt. For the purpose of treating breast cancer in men, Tamoxifen can be used in any stage ranging from the initial stages to after treatment and even after the cancer has metastasized to other parts of the body.
Countering the effects of anabolic steroids
Bodybuilders tend to use anabolic steroids to boost their muscle gain and performance. They practice what is called an on-off cycle. During the on cycle, anabolic steroids are taken while during the off cycle, supplements or drugs taken are those that counter the effects of the anabolic steroids. These include Tamoxifen which serves to help the body regain its normal functioning by countering the effects of the steroids. How does this work? Taking anabolic steroids suppresses the body’s ability to produce androgen hormones. In turn, the body responds by producing more estrogen which causes unwanted side effects. By stopping the utilization of this estrogen by the body, its effects are not felt and bodybuilders get to gain from the steroids without having to sacrifice their health.
